Description
The CWM 7.4 S2 is a 2.5-way in-ceiling speaker from B&W, designed to integrate discreetly into a ceiling or wall without compromising sound reproduction. It can be installed as the left, right or centre channel of a home cinema system, or in a stereo configuration in a medium to large room.
Its configuration combines a 25 mm carbon dome tweeter, two 100 mm Continuum cone midrange drivers and two 100 mm woofers with an aramid fibre and paper profile. This arrangement across three types of transducers delivers a frequency response of 45 Hz to 28 kHz (± 3 dB), extended to 43 Hz - 33 kHz at -6 dB, with a sensitivity of 86 dB (2.83 Vrms, 1 m) and contained harmonic distortion, below 1 % between 80 Hz and 33 kHz and 0.5 % above 120 Hz. The nominal impedance of 8 Ω (minimum 4.9 Ω) and the recommended amplifier power, between 25 W and 150 W, make it compatible with the majority of domestic amplifiers and AV receivers.
This model is aimed at home cinema installations seeking careful architectural integration, as well as hi-fi enthusiasts wishing to do away with the visual presence of stand-mounted or floorstanding speakers. What to check before buying used
On this type of in-ceiling speaker, the magnetic grille and the finish paint (white, paintable) mark easily during removal: check for any traces of dried paint or forced fixings on the frame. Also check the condition of the Continuum membranes and the carbon dome, visible without the grille, for any denting or tearing. The rear chassis and the tilting mounting clips must be intact to ensure an airtight fit into the ceiling or wall.
