The B&W CWM8.5 D is a two-way in-wall speaker, designed to be recessed directly into a wall. It is aimed at installations where the goal is quality sound without visible traditional speakers in the room.
It is built around two complementary drivers. The 25 mm Diamond dome tweeter is mounted decoupled from the rest of the enclosure, which limits parasitic vibrations transmitted from the chassis. Diamond, a material that is both light and rigid, allows treble to be reproduced with precision and without distortion, a point B&W presents as the reference in high-frequency drivers. The second driver, a 180 mm black Continuum-cone midrange/bass driver, handles midrange and bass reproduction, aiming for a clear midrange and deep bass despite the speaker's compact format.

What to check before buying used
Check that the Continuum cone of the 180 mm driver shows no deformation or trace of moisture, a common defect on an in-wall speaker that has been in a poorly insulated wall. The tweeter's Diamond dome is very thin and susceptible to damage during removal: check for any crack or visible indentation. Also inspect the finishing grille and metal frame, which can warp or corrode after a long-standing in-wall installation.
