Description
The DB4S is an active subwoofer from B&W, designed to bring a home cinema system the extension and impact that the main speakers cannot provide on their own. It naturally complements a 700 Series setup, handling the reproduction of the soundtrack's lowest frequencies.
It is built around a single 25 cm driver fitted with an Aerofoil cone, a variable-thickness design intended to combine rigidity and lightness for precise air displacement and pronounced bass impact. The subwoofer uses a sealed-box enclosure, an architecture that favours control and frequency stability over raw output.
Amplification is provided by a Hypex Class D digital amplifier stage delivering 1000 watts of maximum output power. This built-in electronics directly drives the driver and includes a digital preamplifier fitted with dynamic equalisation, intended to maintain a consistent tonal balance regardless of listening level. What to check before buying used
With this type of active subwoofer, attention should be paid to the Hypex Class D amplifier stage: intermittent operation, abnormal standby behaviour or absence of signal may indicate a faulty electronic module, which is costly to replace. It is also worth listening to the Aerofoil cone of the 25 cm driver at high volume, listening out for a rubbing noise or distortion indicating a worn suspension. A check of the XLR and RCA connectors, as well as the original mains cable, completes the inspection.
