Description
The Formation Audio is a network unit from B&W, designed to integrate an existing passive hi-fi setup into a wireless streaming ecosystem. It allows any audio source to be connected and sent to passive speakers, without replacing the electronics already in place.
It relies on B&W's exclusive Formation wireless technology, and supports Wifi, Apple AirPlay 2, Spotify Connect as well as Bluetooth. It features a high-performance analogue-to-digital and digital-to-analogue converter, and can stream high-resolution audio at 96 kHz/24-bit to the connected system.
The unit is designed for quick installation, without complex configuration, and syncs with other products in the Formation range to build a coherent multiroom setup across several rooms or sources.
This unit is aimed at owners of a hi-fi system or passive speakers already in place, who wish to bring them the benefits of modern streaming, Spotify Connect, AirPlay 2, Bluetooth, without changing amplification or speakers.
What to check before buying used
The unit relies on wireless protocols and proprietary syncing with the Formation range: it is worth checking that Wifi, AirPlay 2 and Bluetooth pair correctly with an account and a network, as some units have experienced pairing issues after a reset or a change of household. B&W firmware updates determine compatibility with streaming apps: a unit left offline for a long time may require a full reset to become detectable again. The RCA connectors and external power supply also deserve a visual check, as this unit is often handled during setup changes.
