The Formation Bar is a surround sound bar from B&W, designed to accompany a television while delivering expanded sound reproduction thanks to its multiple built-in speakers.
It houses 9 optimised performance speakers arranged within the chassis, including a dedicated centre channel intended to enhance dialogue clarity. Playback is delivered in high-resolution stereo up to 96 kHz/24 bit, a format that allows more detail to be reproduced than standard compressed audio. B&W's exclusive Formation® wireless technology ensures signal transmission between compatible devices without additional cabling.
In terms of connectivity, the sound bar is compatible with Apple AirPlay 2, Spotify Connect, Roon and Bluetooth, allowing streaming from a wide range of sources and applications without complex setup. It is also designed to synchronise with other products in the Formation range, in order to build a coherent multiroom system.
This model is aimed at those who wish to improve their television's sound without adding multiple speakers and cables, while retaining the option of gradually incorporating other Formation components into the same wireless installation.

What to check before buying used
The Formation® wireless sync unit should be tested to confirm pairing with the television as well as with any satellites or subwoofer from the same range. The power connectors and the optical/HDMI ARC socket are worth checking, as is the firmware update, often required to restore full functionality of AirPlay 2, Spotify Connect or Roon. Each speaker in the chassis should also be listened to, particularly the centre channel, to detect any distortion.
