B&W Formation Duo
Pair of active, wireless bookshelf speakers from B&W, combining the carbon dome tweeter from the 700 Series with the Continuum cone from the 800 Series, for high-resolution networked listening without separate electronics.
Description
The Formation Duo are active bookshelf speakers designed by B&W to form a complete listening system on their own. They receive music via B&W's proprietary Formation wireless technology, without the need to add an amplifier or a dedicated source. Each speaker connects to the network and to its twin, reducing setup to a matter of minutes.
The acoustic design draws on solutions from the manufacturer's higher-end ranges. The carbon dome tweeter comes from the 700 Series and uses the Tweeter-on-Top arrangement, meaning a housing placed at the top of the cabinet: the treble driver is thus mechanically decoupled from the rest of the speaker, which limits parasitic vibrations transmitted by the woofer. The mid-bass driver, meanwhile, uses the Continuum cone, developed for the 800 Series and known for its breakup behaviour compared with traditional cones. Wireless transmission supports high-resolution 24-bit / 96 kHz format, meaning the signal is not reduced to CD quality between the source and the speakers.
On the source side, the Formation Duo support Apple AirPlay 2, Spotify Connect, Roon and Bluetooth, covering playback from a smartphone as well as integration with a library managed by computer or server. They also synchronise with other components in the Formation range, for multi-room listening.
This model is aimed at listeners who want polished stereo playback without stacking components or managing power cabling. It suits a lounge or medium-sized listening room, on dedicated stands or on furniture, and is well suited to those who listen mainly via streaming while refusing to compromise on sound quality. A set of floor stands is available as an option for this model.

What to check before buying used
On these active, connected speakers, the built-in electronics deserve as much attention as the drivers: check that each speaker pairs correctly with the other and joins the network without dropouts, as a wireless connection fault is more common than an amplification failure. Also check that the firmware can still be updated and that the speaker is still recognised by the management app, a requirement for AirPlay 2 or Roon to function. The tweeter, mounted at the top of the cabinet and therefore exposed, should be examined closely: dome intact, grille not dented. Finally, run a hand over the woofer's suspension and inspect the cabinet finish, which is often marked at the corners during house moves.
