Description
The Formation Flex is a compact wireless speaker from Bowers & Wilkins, designed to fit in as easily on its own in a room as within a larger audio system. It can be paired with a second Flex to form a stereo pair, or combined with a Formation Bar and/or a Formation Bass to create a multiroom surround system.
It features a Class D amplifier delivering 100 watts, paired with a 100 mm midrange/woofer with a woven fibreglass cone and a 25 mm double dome tweeter. Its frequency response ranges from 50 Hz to 28 kHz, allowing it to cover a wide sound spectrum despite its compact size. Audio playback is handled at 24-bit / 96 kHz, a resolution that allows high-definition files to be streamed without loss of quality.
Connectivity relies on Bowers & Wilkins' proprietary Formation wireless technology, which uses a dedicated network to synchronise multiple speakers from room to room. The speaker supports WiFi, Bluetooth V4.1 with AptX HD, AAC and SBC codecs, as well as AirPlay 2, multiroom, Roon Ready and Spotify Connect. The whole system can be controlled from the Bowers & Wilkins Music app, available on iOS and Android, which allows speakers to be grouped together and streaming services to be integrated.

What to check before buying used
With this type of connected speaker, most wear affects the electronics rather than the drivers: check that WiFi and Bluetooth pair without dropouts and that Formation technology correctly recognises the speaker in the app, particularly if it has been used as a stereo pair or in a multiroom system. Listen to the tweeter and midrange/woofer at high volume to rule out any distortion or crackling that would indicate a worn component. Finally, check the condition of the grille and the casing finish, as well as the presence of the original mains cable.
