The HTM71 S3 is a high-end centre speaker from Bowers & Wilkins, part of the 700 Series range. Designed as a natural partner to the 705 S3, 703 S3 and 702 S3 speakers, it delivers dialogue and voice reproduction within a multichannel home cinema installation.
The Tweeter-on-Top enclosure is machined from a single block of solid aluminium, a construction intended to limit cabinet resonances. The 25 mm carbon dome tweeter benefits from a Nautilus tube loading and features a resonance point pushed up to 47 kHz, improving the precision of the sound image and treble detail. The 130 mm Continuum FST cone midrange driver avoids the behavioural breakup typical of conventional drivers, for an open and neutral vocal rendering. The two variable-thickness Aerofoil cone bass drivers bring rigidity and dynamism to the low end. With a power handling of 200 W RMS, an impedance of 8 ohms and a sensitivity of 89 dB/1W/1m, it can be paired with an amplifier delivering between 30 and 200 W RMS into 8 ohms.

What to check before buying used
The Continuum and Aerofoil cones hold up well over time, but each driver should be listened to individually to detect any suspension noise or misalignment of the carbon dome tweeter. The solid aluminium cabinet finish, particularly the Midnight Blue Metallic or Datuk Gloss finishes, warrants examination from different angles to spot any marks or chips. Also check for any play or deformation in the Aerofoil bass cones, which are exposed during handling.
