Description
The MM5 from Essential Audio Tools is a mains power block intended for hi-fi audio systems. It differs from a conventional multi-socket extension by its casing machined from a block of synthetic material and by a wiring architecture designed to limit interference between the devices connected to it.
Each socket is connected using star wiring, which reduces electrical interaction between the various devices connected at the same time. The block also incorporates a mains filtering system, combined with surge protection: it withstands a maximum voltage of 250 V, a peak voltage of up to 2,500 V and a peak current of up to 4,500 A, with a maximum peak energy of 3 × 65 J. Its response time of under 25 ns allows rapid intervention against transient spikes on the mains supply. Each socket accepts a maximum continuous current of 10 A, for a maximum total current of 10 A across the whole block.

What to check before buying used
With this type of surge protector, the key point is the wear indicator or protection warning light where the model has one: repeated exposure to surges silently wears down the protective components without the sockets ceasing to function normally. It is therefore worth checking that the filtering function is still working, rather than simply that current passes through. An inspection of the internal star wiring and socket connectors, which are sometimes subject to frequent plugging and unplugging, allows any play or abnormal heating to be ruled out.
