Description
The MM7 from Essential Audio Tools is a mains distribution block designed to power a hifi or home cinema installation. It sits between the wall socket and the various components of the system to distribute power while filtering out disturbances that can circulate on the mains network. The unit has an IEC C13 inlet and therefore connects to a separate power cord, not supplied.
The block offers 7 high-pressure contact type F outlets, 3 of which are equipped with a filter specifically dedicated to digital sources, which are more sensitive to interference generated by switch-mode power supplies. Each outlet benefits from individual star wiring, a configuration that limits interactions between connected devices by preventing them from sharing the same cabling segment. Surge protection relies on precise characteristics: a maximum peak voltage of 2,500 V, a peak current of 4,500 A and a peak energy of 3 × 65 J, for a response time of under 25 ns, which reflects an ability to rapidly absorb transient spikes before they reach the connected equipment. What to check before buying used
With this type of mains distribution block, the key issue lies in the integrity of the internal surge arresters: after a lightning strike or a significant surge, the protective components can wear silently and lose effectiveness without this being visible from the outside. It is worth checking the condition of the 7 type F mains outlets (contacts, absence of overheating marks or excessive play) as well as the secure fit of the IEC C13 inlet. A continuity and earth connection test on each outlet remains the best way to ensure that the advertised filtering and protection are still fully operational.
