Description
The MM8 from Essential Audio Tools is a mains distribution unit designed to power an audio system. It differs from a standard extension lead through its internal star wiring, a design intended to limit electrical interactions between the different output sockets.
Each socket is wired independently to the input point, which reduces parasitic coupling between devices connected simultaneously. The unit also incorporates a mains filtering system, combined with surge protection: the maximum peak voltage withstood reaches 2,500 V, for a maximum peak current of 4,500 A and an absorbable peak energy of 3 × 65 J. The stated response time, under 25 ns, corresponds to the speed at which the protection reacts to a transient mains disturbance.
For everyday power supply, the MM8 accepts a maximum voltage of 250 V and delivers up to 10 A continuously per socket, with a total maximum current also limited to 10 A across the whole unit.

What to check before buying used
The built-in surge protector is a wear component: repeated exposure to surges, even minor ones, progressively degrades its absorption capacity without any outward sign, hence the importance of checking whether an active protection indicator is present and lit. The star wiring relies on each internal connection to the input point remaining intact: a poor contact on a single socket can reappear as a hum or a localised cut-out. A check of the mains sockets (looseness, oxidation, plug retention) and of the power cord is also recommended before use.
