Description
The Boston Acoustics CR57 is a two-way bookshelf speaker, designed with a bass-reflex loading. It belongs to a range of compact speakers intended to fit into a living room or office, while offering a balanced sound reproduction across the entire audible spectrum.
The woofer/midrange driver measures 11.5 cm in diameter and works alongside a 19 mm Kortec soft dome tweeter, a woven material designed to combine treble precision with smoothness of listening. The crossover frequency between the two ways is set at 2,600 Hz, the point at which the tweeter takes over from the woofer/midrange driver. The stated frequency response extends from 80 Hz to 20 kHz, at plus or minus 3 dB, which defines the speaker's effective reproduction range. With a nominal impedance of 8 Ω, it is compatible with the vast majority of amplifiers, whether transistor or valve, for a recommended power of between 10 and 75 W.
This bookshelf format is suited to small or medium volume use, in a stereo configuration or as an addition to an existing system. Its moderate power handling makes it better suited to low- to medium-power amplifiers than to home cinema installations demanding high dynamics.

What to check before buying used
Check the flexibility of the 11.5 cm woofer/midrange driver's surrounds, which can harden or crack with age and affect bass performance. Inspect the Kortec tweeter dome, which is susceptible to deformation and accidental dents. Also examine the cherry-finish cabinet: chipped veneer, compressed corners or signs of moisture on the casing, and check that the bass-reflex port is neither obstructed nor cracked.
