Description
The Horizon HS460 from Boston Acoustics is a 2-way floorstanding speaker intended for a stereo system without requiring a separate subwoofer. It relies on a passive radiator design that allows it to generate extended bass from conventional electronics, without oversized amplification.
The bass section is handled by two 16.5 cm woofers with copolymer cones, a material valued for its rigidity and its ability to limit distortion under heavy loads. The treble is handled by a 25 mm Kortec soft dome tweeter, designed to deliver a high level of detail at the top of the spectrum.

What to check before buying used
The passive radiators and port that extend the bass response rely on a surround that must still be supple: a visual inspection of the two copolymer cones and the 18 cm radiators will help rule out any sagging, cracking or detachment of the surround. The more fragile Kortec dome deserves inspection under raking light to spot any deformation or dent not visible at rest. A test listen at moderate volume will confirm the absence of any unwanted noise or distortion in the lower spectrum, which would indicate a radiator detached from the chassis.
