Description
The Bryston BR-20 is a high-end analogue preamplifier that combines several functions within a single unit: digital-to-analogue conversion, network playback and headphone amplification. It forms the heart of an audiophile system by centralising analogue and digital sources, without requiring additional peripheral devices for headphone listening or streaming.
The unit is built on a fully balanced preamplification architecture, with discrete class A analogue circuits designed specifically for this model. Each BR-20 has a total harmonic distortion plus noise (THD+N) rating of 0.0006% or lower, reflecting a very low level of signal colouration. The preamplifier also integrates the BDA-3 digital-to-analogue converter along with a streaming platform derived from the BDP series, compatible with PCM formats up to 384 kHz / 32-bit and DSD x4. Digital inputs include two AES/EBU ports, a TOSLINK port, an S/PDIF port on RCA and a USB port, alongside two balanced and unbalanced inputs and two balanced outputs. The analogue and digital circuits have separate power supplies, and all inputs are relay-switched.
The built-in headphone amplifier has been optimised to deliver increased power with lower output impedance, allowing it to drive headphones known to be difficult to power. Volume control can be carried out via software or in balanced mode, and the whole system is controlled via a web interface accessible from a smartphone, tablet or computer, as well as via the supplied BR-4 remote control, with RS232 and network connectivity.
This preamplifier is aimed at demanding audiophile installations wishing to bring together several sources, digital, analogue, or even vinyl or HDMI depending on the options, around a single central unit, capable of handling listening on both speakers and high-end headphones.

What to check before buying used
The BR-20 can optionally be fitted with an MM phono card and an HDMI module, available separately or combined, which extends its connectivity for vinyl enthusiasts or home cinema systems incorporating DSD playback. When buying a used unit, it is worth checking that relay switching functions correctly across all inputs, the condition of the digital and analogue connectors, and the presence and operation of the BR-4 remote control. If the unit is fitted with the optional MM phono card or HDMI module, it is worth confirming that these modules are properly recognised and operational.
