The Optimum Orion from Positive Cable is a digital coaxial cable designed to connect a digital audio source, such as a player or transport, to a converter or amplifier fitted with a coaxial input. It is used to carry the audio signal in digital form between two devices in a hi-fi system.
Its connectors are made of 24 carat gold-plated copper, a treatment that limits oxidation of the contacts over time and promotes consistent signal transfer. The cable also incorporates an optimised dielectric, that is, an insulating material designed to reduce signal distortion at high frequencies, a sensitive point in the transmission of digital audio data.
This type of cable is aimed at users who wish to take care of the digital link in their system, between a source and a DAC for example, in a system where the aim is to limit losses or alterations to the signal at this particular point.
What to check before buying used
The quality of the shielding and the soldering of the connectors determine how well this type of cable holds up over time: check that the sheath shows no cracks or pronounced bends, which could damage the internal dielectric.
