Description
The Jamo Sub 800 is a subwoofer designed to deliver powerful bass in a reduced format. It is the first model in a generation of small subwoofers presented by the brand as capable of reproducing extreme low frequencies despite their contained size.
Its technical distinctiveness lies in a three-driver architecture using 16.5 cm units: one active driver paired with two passive drivers, working together inside a cubic cabinet twenty centimetres to a side. This configuration allows bass production to be concentrated within a compact volume, without requiring a large cabinet to achieve an assertive low-end performance.
The Sub 800 is available in a lacquered finish, black or white, which allows it to blend easily into a living room or a space where the bulk of a traditional subwoofer would be a problem.
This type of subwoofer is aimed at those wishing to reinforce the bass of a hi-fi or home cinema system without sacrificing floor space, particularly in modestly sized rooms where a large subwoofer would be difficult to place.
What to check before buying used
Test each driver of the trio, including the two passive units often overlooked during inspection, as an imbalance between them impoverishes the bass performance this compact format is meant to deliver. Inspect the lacquered finish, black or white, which is particularly prone to micro-scratches and chipping on the corners of the cubic cabinet. Also check the condition of the connection terminals and the absence of play in the cabinetwork, a sign that the enclosure remains properly airtight.
