Description
The Furtive Sub by Atohm is a subwoofer designed for wall mounting, fixed directly against the wall or on its dedicated removable bracket. Its slim design, only 16.5 cm thick, opens up unusual integration possibilities for a subwoofer, difficult to achieve with a floor-standing model. It was originally conceived to form a coherent set with the wall-mounted speakers from the Furtive range by the same manufacturer.
The technical heart of the Furtive Sub is based on a driver from Atohm's high-end Absolute Series, the LD230 model. This transducer features a 4.7 kilo motor and a voice coil capable of an 18 mm excursion, characteristics that reflect a desire to generate powerful bass despite the compact format imposed by the slim chassis. To control this demanding driver, Atohm has integrated third-generation ICE Power digital amplification within its dedicated electronics, the S300 module. This also includes an active filter with a slope adjustable between 12 and 24 dB per octave, allowing the way the subwoofer connects to the main speakers to be adjusted.

What to check before buying used
On this slim wall-mounted model, the fixing to the removable bracket is the point to check first: check the tightness and absence of play, as a poorly secured mounting can cause vibrations against the wall. Inspect the LD230's membrane (tear, detached suspension) and test the S300 amplification module: a faulty ICE Power unit often results in unexpected standby mode or a complete absence of sound. Also check that the active filter responds correctly across its full 12 to 24 dB/octave range, as a worn adjustment potentiometer can become imprecise or crackly.
