Cambridge Audio AX-R100D

The AXR100D is a stereo integrated amplifier that sits at the top of Cambridge Audio's AX range. It combines an amplification section, a radio tuner, a phono stage and a DAC in a single chassis, making it a central component capable of directly driving a pair of speakers without additional electronics.

Its distinguishing feature compared with the AXR85 model in the same range is the presence of a digital-to-analogue converter, paired with three digital inputs on the rear of the unit. It delivers 100 watts per channel into 8 ohms, with total harmonic distortion below 0.01% at 1 kHz, resulting in a clean sound reproduction even at sustained volume. Its frequency response extends from 5 Hz to 50 kHz at -3 dB, comfortably covering the audible spectrum, while a signal-to-noise ratio above 82 dB keeps background hiss to a minimum. The damping factor of above 50 indicates good control of the amplifier over speaker driver movement, particularly in the bass.

The unit also includes a DAB+ and FM tuner with RDS, an MM phono stage for connecting a turntable directly, as well as a Bluetooth 5.0 receiver for streaming music from a smartphone, tablet or computer.
