Description
The Evo 150 SE is an integrated amplifier combining a power stage, digital-to-analogue converter and network streaming module within a single compact chassis. It allows speakers to be connected directly without going through a separate power amplifier, while also handling playback of dematerialised music from a home network or online services.
The amplification is based on Hypex NCore modules, which Cambridge Audio has tuned to deliver 2 x 150 W into 8 ohms, sufficient power to drive speakers of various sizes. Digital-to-analogue conversion is handled by an ESS Sabre ES9018K2M chip capable of processing files up to 32-bit / 384 kHz in PCM, ensuring faithful playback of high-resolution formats.
In terms of connectivity, the unit features a phono input for a turntable with a moving magnet cartridge, RCA and XLR analogue inputs, as well as HDMI ARC, USB Audio, Toslink and coaxial digital inputs. It also offers a preamplifier output and a subwoofer output, allowing the system to be expanded into a more complete configuration.
The network section supports Wi-Fi and wired Ethernet, with compatibility for Spotify Connect, TIDAL Connect, Qobuz, Deezer and internet radio, as well as AirPlay 2, Chromecast, Roon Ready and UPnP protocols.

What to check before buying used
Check that the output relays function correctly and that there is no hum or distortion at low volume, a common sign of ageing capacitors on the amplification modules. Systematically test each digital input and the phono input, as well as the network connection (Wi-Fi, Ethernet, Roon Ready), which may require a firmware update. Inspect the motorised volume knob and the remote control, whose batteries or infrared sensor sometimes fail on units that have seen heavy use.
