Description
The Cambridge Audio L/R S form a pair of active bookshelf speakers, designed to be installed on a desk, shelf or low unit. Each speaker houses its own amplifier, which allows them to be connected directly to a computer, a turntable or a Bluetooth source without going through a separate amplifier.
Each speaker pairs a 21 mm aluminium tweeter with a 3-inch woofer supported by a bass-reflex port placed at the rear, for an output power of 2x50 W. The frequency response extends from 55 Hz to 24 kHz (+/-3 dB), and the DynamEQ function adjusts the tonal balance according to listening volume. Three equalisation modes (Normal, Video, Voice) allow the sound to be adapted according to the type of content being listened to or watched.
The connectivity covers both wired and wireless uses: a USB-C input and a TOSLINK optical input for digital sources, a pair of RCA for analogue sources, and Bluetooth with support for SBC, AAC, aptX and aptX HD codecs for wireless streaming in refined quality. A subwoofer output is also available to extend the bass with a separate subwoofer.
This model is aimed at those looking for a compact listening solution for a desk, bedroom or small living room, without wanting to multiply devices: computer, turntable, television or smartphone can all be connected to it as needed.

What to check before buying used
Check that the rear bass-reflex port has not been damaged during transport or a poorly executed wall mounting, and listen to each speaker separately to detect any potential internal amplification fault, as these active models each house their own electronics. Test all inputs (USB-C, optical, RCA) as well as Bluetooth pairing, as a rarely used connector can oxidise or make poor contact over time. Also check the condition of the aluminium tweeter, which is sensitive to knocks and to marks left by careless cleaning.
