Description
The L/R X are a pair of active speakers from Cambridge Audio designed to play music without the need for a separate amplifier or subwoofer. Each speaker houses its own amplification and connects both via cable and wirelessly, making it possible to build a complete hi-fi system from these two floorstanding speakers alone.
Each speaker pairs a 28 mm aluminium tweeter with two forward-facing 5-inch woofers and two 6-inch passive radiators mounted on the sides, delivering an output power of 2x400 W. This configuration allows the system to reach down to 35 Hz without an additional subwoofer, with a frequency response spanning 35 Hz to 24 kHz (+/-3 dB). The DynamEQ function and EQ modes (Normal, Video, Voice), controllable from the StreamMagic app, allow the sound to be adjusted according to the content being listened to.

What to check before buying used
With this type of active speaker, the amplification and electronics are built directly into the cabinets: each channel should be tested separately to rule out any humming, intermittent cut-out or distortion at high volume. The passive radiators and woofers warrant a visual check of their suspension, which can stiffen or crack over time. It is also worth checking that Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and the connection to the StreamMagic app work correctly, as well as confirming that all inputs (HDMI eARC, USB-C, MM phono) are recognised before purchase.
