Description
The MXW70 is a stereo power amplifier from Cambridge Audio, built around a Hypex nCore Class D module. Its half-width 215 mm chassis makes it an appliance designed for installations where available space is limited, without sacrificing the power available to the speakers.
The output stage delivers 70 W per channel into 8 ohms in stereo operation, a figure that rises to 125 W per channel into 4 ohms as speaker impedance drops. In bridged mono configuration, where the two channels are combined to power a single speaker, the available power reaches 250 W into 8 ohms, a useful option for particularly current-hungry speakers.
The rear connectivity offers an unbalanced RCA input and a balanced XLR input, selectable via a dedicated switch, as is the stereo or mono mode. An automatic activation system via 12V trigger and USB allows the amplifier's power-on to be synchronised with a preamplifier or an MXN10 streamer, via the StreamMagic protocol for remote control.
This compact format and Class D architecture are aimed at those wishing to integrate a power amplifier into an already crowded cabinet or rack, or to complement a system driven by a separate preamplifier or streamer. The bridged mono mode extends its use to bi-amplified configurations or speakers with high current demands.

What to check before buying used
The Hypex nCore module itself is very reliable, but it is best to check for absence of hum, distortion or unwanted cut-outs at power-up, particularly on the 12V trigger and USB activation functions. Test both inputs (RCA and XLR) as well as the stereo/mono switch, a selector sometimes prone to intermittent contact after several years of use. A check of the ventilation and operating temperature under prolonged load is also recommended, as the slim half-width chassis leaves little margin for cooling.
