Description
The Canton CD1 is a 5.1 home cinema set designed to deliver complete surround sound while taking up minimal space. It comprises four microsatellites, a centre speaker and an active subwoofer, the whole set being designed to be installed easily around a television without cluttering the room.
The four microsatellites are identical and each houses a 76 mm aluminium woofer within an enclosure also made of aluminium. Their frequency response extends from 80 Hz to 25 kHz, with a crossover frequency set at 3.6 kHz between the woofer and the tweeter. The centre speaker, in a horizontal configuration, uses the same transducers as the satellites, namely two woofers paired with a tweeter, which ensures tonal consistency between the front channels and the centre channel.
The subwoofer is active and features a 100 W amplifier. It extends down to 38 Hz and offers crossover, level and phase adjustments, allowing its integration to be fine-tuned according to the room and the other speakers in the system.
This format is aimed at those seeking a compact and unobtrusive 5.1 home cinema system, suited to installation in a small or medium-sized room, without adding to the visual clutter around the television. What to check before buying used
On the microsatellites, check that the 76 mm aluminium woofers show no dents or suspension detachment, as these small transducers are sensitive to impacts. Inspect the aluminium enclosures for signs of oxidation or impact marks that would suggest a fall. On the active subwoofer, systematically test the 100 W amplifier as well as the crossover, level and phase controls, whose potentiometers can oxidise over time. Finally, check the condition of the cables connecting the five speakers to the subwoofer, which are often thin and weakened by repeated handling.
