Description
The HD 800S is an open-back circumaural headphone designed by Sennheiser as a reference model, intended for sound reproduction as natural and faithful as possible down to the smallest detail. It follows on from the HD 800, whose original sound formula it retains and refines.
The headphones are precision-built in Germany, using selected materials. The transducer is set in stainless steel, while the headband and earcup fixing system use materials from the aerospace industry, chosen for their high strength combined with minimal weight. The headband construction, made of layered metal and plastic, dampens vibrations transmitted to the earcups. The microfibre ear pads are handmade and designed for comfort suited to long listening sessions.
In terms of connectivity, the HD 800S is supplied with two cables: a 6.3 mm connector and a balanced XLR-4 cable, the latter allowing use with sources offering a balanced output, such as a headphone amplifier like the Sennheiser HDVD 800.
These open-back headphones are intended for critical listening in a quiet, seated environment, typically for audiophile listening at home, paired with a quality headphone amplifier and, ideally, a balanced source to make the most of the supplied XLR-4 cable.
What to check before buying used
Microfibre ear pads eventually compress or crack over time, which alters the comfort and fit of the headphones on the ears: their condition deserves close inspection. Also check the flexibility of the headband and for any play in the earcup fixing systems, as well as the secure contact of the 6.3 mm and XLR-4 connectors on both supplied cables. A slight volume imbalance between the two transducers or a rubbing noise when fitting them may indicate wear that should be monitored.
