Description
The Cayin CS-100A KT88 is a tube integrated amplifier, built around eight KT88 power tubes. It stands out for its ability to switch between two operating modes, triode and ultra-linear, effectively offering two amplifiers in one depending on listening mood or the difficulty of the speakers being driven.
In triode mode, the available power is 50 W into 4 and 8 ohms, with a stated frequency response of 8 Hz to 75 kHz. What to check before buying used
On an integrated amplifier with eight KT88s, tube ageing governs the entire sound character: excessive distortion, blaring or channel imbalance often call for a full new set, the cost of which is not insignificant. The triode/ultra-linear selector and input switches, used each time the mode is changed, can develop faulty contacts resulting in crackling noises. It is also worth listening for hum at idle, which points to worn filter capacitors, and checking that the output chokes do not run abnormally hot in ultra-linear mode.
