Description
The Cayin Jazz 80 KT88 is a tube integrated amplifier designed to drive a pair of speakers directly, without an additional power stage. It combines the characteristic sound of valves with high-resolution Bluetooth connectivity, allowing wireless listening alongside the classic analogue inputs.
The unit runs on eight tubes: four KT88 for power, two 12AX7 for signal amplification and two 12AU7 for channel balancing. Two operating modes are available: triode mode, which delivers 2 x 20 W, and ultra-linear mode, which rises to 2 x 40 W into 4 and 8 ohms. The former favours a softer, more open rendering, suited to vocals and acoustic instruments; the latter provides more power and bass control, useful with less sensitive speakers or denser music. The frequency response extends from 8 Hz to 60 kHz, with total harmonic distortion of 0.2% at 1 kHz and a signal-to-noise ratio of 90 dB.
This type of amplifier is aimed at a listener who wants to enjoy the particular grain of tubes while retaining the flexibility of a modern unit, capable of switching between two sonic characters depending on the material being played or the associated speakers. The 6.35 mm jack headphone output also allows individual listening without going through the speakers.

What to check before buying used
When buying used, attention should first be paid to the condition of the eight tubes: their gradual wear results in a loss of dynamics or increased hiss, and replacement should be anticipated depending on their age. The proper functioning of the triode/ultra-linear mode selector should also be checked, along with the condition of the screw terminals and RCA sockets, which are subject to repeated connections. The Bluetooth link deserves a connection and stability test before purchase, and a visual inspection of the chassis, particularly the retro VU meters, allows any impact marks or signs of wear from transport or handling to be identified.
