Sumiko Black Pearl
Sumiko Black Pearl moving magnet cartridge, fitted with a finer diamond for more precise and dynamic vinyl playback.
Description
The Sumiko Black Pearl is a moving magnet (MM) cartridge designed to be fitted to a turntable. It sits in the headshell of the tonearm and converts the grooves of the record into an electrical signal transmitted to a phono preamplifier.
This model represents an evolution of Sumiko's Oyster cartridge. It shares the same base while incorporating a finer diamond and a more refined design. This refined diamond allows for more faithful reading of the micro-details engraved in the groove, resulting in a stronger electrical output, better stereo channel separation and a wider bandwidth.
In practical terms, enhanced channel separation improves the precision of the stereo image, while a wider bandwidth allows a fuller sound spectrum to be reproduced, from bass to treble. A stronger output also makes it easier to match with different MM phono preamplifiers.
The Black Pearl is aimed at vinyl enthusiasts wishing to upgrade their system beyond an entry-level cartridge, without moving to a moving coil cartridge that is more demanding in terms of preamplification. It is suited to demanding listening on a classic hi-fi system fitted with an MM phono stage.
What to check before buying used
The fine diamond stylus may be worn or slightly misaligned depending on how the previous owner used it: wear that is invisible to the naked eye is enough to degrade treble reproduction and accelerate groove marking. Also check the condition of the cantilever suspension wire, which is sensitive to knocks during handling, as well as the fixing of the connection pins at the rear of the cartridge. A replacement stylus is available for this model, which allows a cartridge body that is otherwise in good condition to be given a second life.
