Clearaudio Basic V2

The Basic V2 is a phono preamplifier designed in Germany by Clearaudio, intended to receive the signal from a turntable cartridge and bring it up to a level usable by a conventional amplifier. It is positioned as a dedicated interface component, separate from the power stage, for those who wish to handle vinyl playback with specific equipment rather than a simple built-in phono stage.

The unit is compatible with the two main cartridge families, moving magnet (MM) and moving coil (MC), thanks to a switch located under the chassis. Gain reaches +46 dB in MM and +66 dB in MC at 1 kHz, a difference that reflects the much lower output level of moving coil cartridges. Input impedances are also matched to each cartridge type: 47 kΩ / 270 pF in MM, 500 Ω / 270 pF in MC, values which govern the correct electrical loading of the cartridge used. The RIAA equalisation, stated at ± 0.1 dB, and distortion below 0.002%, reflect faithful reproduction of the vinyl cutting curve, with limited background noise and artefacts. A switchable subsonic filter additionally allows attenuation of the very low frequencies sometimes generated by a warped record or mechanical resonances from the turntable.

This preamplifier is aimed at vinyl enthusiasts who already have a turntable fitted with an MM or MC cartridge and who wish to move away from a built-in phono stage on their amplifier, which is often more limited. Its role as an interface makes it a sensible choice for a system where the aim is to isolate and specifically refine the amplification of the phono signal, which is sensitive to interference and noise.

When buying used, it is worth checking that the MM/MC switch under the chassis works correctly, as its contacts can oxidise over time and cause crackling or channel loss. It is also worth making sure there is no abnormal background noise, hum or distortion when listening, which would indicate ageing of the internal gain stage components. Finally, the input and output connectors deserve a visual check and a contact test, as these preamplifiers are often handled during cartridge or cabling changes.
