Description
The Concept MC is a moving coil (MC) cartridge designed by Clearaudio. It mounts on a tonearm and converts the movements of the diamond in the record groove into an electrical signal intended for a phono stage suited to MC cartridges.
It is fitted with a boron cantilever, a rigid and lightweight material that favours precise reproduction of the detail cut into the groove. Its stylus is a Micro Line type, a diamond profile designed to closely follow the shape of the groove. Its internal impedance is 11 Ohm, a value to take into account when matching it to the MC phono input of the amplifier or preamplifier used. The two stereo channels are balanced to within less than half a decibel, ensuring a coherent sound image between the two channels.
This cartridge is aimed at vinyl enthusiasts with a turntable and tonearm compatible with fitting an MC cartridge, as well as a phono stage or preamplifier accepting an internal impedance of 11 Ohm. It will suit an audiophile looking to step up in quality from the more common moving magnet (MM) cartridges.
What to check before buying used
The boron cantilever and its Micro Line stylus cannot tolerate any impact: check for cracks or misalignment under magnification before fitting. The condition of the diamond remains the hardest point to judge by eye on a used unit, yet its wear directly affects groove tracing and the longevity of the records played. Ask if possible for the number of hours of use and check that the output levels of both channels remain balanced, as an abnormal discrepancy may indicate a worn coil or internal suspension.
