Description
The Maestro V2 is a moving magnet (MM) cartridge designed by Clearaudio, a German manufacturer specialising in turntable equipment. A cartridge is the component fitted to the end of the tonearm that converts the record's grooves into an electrical signal, before amplification.
Clearaudio draws on experience gained since 1978, the year the brand produced its first moving coil cartridges. This work went on to inform the development of its range of moving magnet cartridges, with improvements focusing in particular on reducing moving mass, the profile and finish of the diamonds, as well as damping of the cantilever, the lever that carries the stylus tip.
The reduction in mass and the care taken in polishing the diamond aim to improve the way the tip tracks the record's grooves, while cantilever damping helps to limit unwanted resonances in the tonearm.

What to check before buying used
The stylus and cantilever are the first elements to examine closely, as a worn diamond or a misaligned cantilever will permanently compromise groove tracking. Also check the condition of the output wires and connection pins, which are often weakened by repeated fitting and removal on the tonearm. The tracking force and azimuth settings should also be checked before any extended use.
