Description
The Nano Phono V2 is a phono preamplifier from Clearaudio, designed to equip a hi-fi system with a turntable that has no built-in phono stage. Its very compact format makes it easy to fit near the amplifier or turntable, without taking up much space.
The casing is precision-machined from a solid block of aluminium, forming an anti-resonance chassis that protects the printed circuit board from surrounding mechanical vibrations. This mechanical rigidity, combined with a compact size, helps limit interference and ensure quiet operation, an often tricky point on entry-level and mid-range phono preamplifiers.
Inside, the unit is built on an entirely Dual Mono design, with separate electronic circuits for each channel. This architecture comes with a channel separation selector and a gain control, allowing the output level to be adjusted according to the cartridge used. An MM/MC switch is also fitted, making the Nano Phono V2 compatible with most moving magnet and moving coil cartridges.
The circuit uses precision components, including Burr-Brown (Texas Instruments) integrated circuits, together with short circuit traces designed to limit losses and interference on the phono signal, which is particularly sensitive to electrical disturbance.

What to check before buying used
The MM/MC selector and gain potentiometer should be tested throughout their full travel, as an oxidised contact can result in crackling or a channel dropping out. Also check for the absence of hum once the unit is connected to the turntable earth, a common sign of a worn capacitor or internal solder joint. The input and output RCA connectors should remain firm, with no play or signs of oxidation, to preserve the quality of the phono signal.
