Description
The Clearaudio Performer V2 is a moving magnet (MM) cartridge, the first model of a new generation designed by the German manufacturer. It is intended to fit onto a turntable tonearm and replaces the manufacturer's previous generations of cartridges, with several technical developments announced.
Its most visible feature lies in its ebony body, a choice of material intended to limit the mechanical resonance that can interfere with groove tracking. According to the manufacturer, this wooden body is also said to provide a more natural sound than the aluminium or resin bodies usually used on this type of cartridge.
Electrically, Clearaudio states that it has reworked the balance between inductance, capacitance, load and sensitivity, with the aim of reducing distortion and crosstalk while increasing output level and frequency response range. This development is accompanied by redesigned coils and the addition of more powerful magnets. The diamond, for its part, is precision-cut to an elliptical profile.
This type of cartridge is aimed at vinyl enthusiasts who wish to improve the sound reproduction of their turntable without changing their entire setup, relying on finer groove tracking and better stereo channel separation.
What to check before buying used
Check the condition of the stylus: a worn elliptical tip or a misaligned cantilever permanently impairs groove tracking and can damage records. Also check the diamond suspension, which loosens with age and affects modulation tracking. The ebony body deserves careful inspection for cracks or chips, which could compromise the resonance damping that this material is intended to provide. Finally, make sure the connection pins are not oxidised or bent, as this could degrade the signal or throw off the channel balance.
