Description
The Clearaudio Titanium V2 MC is a very high-end cartridge, conceived as the centrepiece of an accomplished analogue system. It sits at the end of the tonearm of a turntable and determines, more than any other link in the chain, the amount of information extracted from the groove. Its design, dominated by a machined metal body, makes it as much an object of careful craftsmanship as a precision transducer.
The body is made of titanium and weighs exactly 8 grams, a mass to take into account when balancing the tonearm and setting the tracking force. The twelve-pin upper interface ensures the connection with the headshell while limiting the parasitic resonances that would otherwise disturb the sound reproduction. The cantilever is made of boron, a rigid and lightweight material that faithfully transmits the movements of the stylus, itself of Micro HD profile, a finely honed shape designed to closely follow the modulation engraved in the groove. The coils are executed in 24-carat gold. The whole unit claims a dynamic range of 95 dB, that is, a considerable gap between the faintest passages and the strongest peaks, which requires a downstream chain capable of not curbing this reserve.

What to check before buying used
The boron cantilever and Micro HD stylus are the two elements to examine first: under a loupe or microscope, check that the cantilever is perfectly straight, with no sign of bending, and that the diamond shows no asymmetric wear or embedded deposits. The number of playing hours already accumulated directly affects the remaining service life, as a heavily used cartridge may require reshaping or replacement of the stylus. The internal suspension is judged by listening and by observing the cantilever's behaviour at rest: sagging or misalignment indicates ageing of the elastomer. Finally, check the condition of the output pins and the threads on the titanium body, which must allow a firm, play-free fit in the headshell.
