Description
The Cold Ray Spike Protector is a decoupling counter-spike designed to receive the spike of a speaker stand, rack or any other audio equipment fitted with spikes. It sits between the spike and the floor to provide both a mechanical decoupling function and a floor-protection function.
Its design combines an aluminium mass surrounding the spike with a high-density silicone pad. The aluminium mass around the spike helps control resonances transmitted by the stand, while the silicone pad ensures complete separation between the equipment and the floor, whatever weight it supports. Silicone was chosen over rubber for better protection of the flooring at the point of contact with the spike.
This type of accessory is aimed at users of speakers, furniture or hi-fi racks fitted with spiked feet, who wish to isolate their setup from the floor without giving up the stability provided by the spikes themselves. It is particularly suited to installations placed on fragile or mark-sensitive flooring, as well as to setups where the aim is to limit the transmission of vibrations to the support.
What to check before buying used
Check that the silicone pad is neither hardened nor split and still adheres properly to the aluminium mass, as any detachment removes the decoupling effect. Also examine the recess receiving the spike: indentation marks or deformation indicate use under heavy load and may affect the stability of the support point. Finally, check for any residue stuck under the pad, which could mark the floor when fitted.
