Description
The ADL X1 is a compact headphone amplifier designed by Alpha Design Labs, a division of the Japanese brand Furutech specialising in audio components for computer-connected systems as well as portable use. It comes as a slim, discreet unit, designed to carry quality electronics without bulk, whilst incorporating a digital-to-analogue converter dedicated to headphone listening.
The unit accepts several types of digital sources. An Apple MFI-certified USB input allows a stream of up to 16/48 to be received from an iPod, iPhone or iPad, whilst a USB output handles 24/192 streams in S/PDIF from a PC for playback of high-resolution files. A TOSLINK optical output also delivers an S/PDIF signal up to 24/192, offering an alternative to a USB connection for linking the X1 to a compatible source.
On the headphone connectivity side, the X1 offers a 4-segment analogue line input in 3.5 mm format as well as a headphone output of the same format, compatible with impedances between 12 and 600 ohms. This range allows it to drive both sensitive in-ear headphones and more demanding headphones. The input also accepts cables fitted with remote control and microphone, a detail designed for use with smartphones. A GND TRRS switch makes it easy to move from a 4-segment jack headphone to a standard 3-segment headphone, avoiding compatibility issues depending on the type of connector.
This type of amplifier is aimed at those who listen mainly on headphones from a computer or an iOS device, and who wish to improve sound quality compared with a built-in audio output. Its compactness also makes it a sound choice for portable use, alongside a well-made headphone or earphone set.
What to check before buying used
The 4-segment 3.5 mm line input connector should be tested from all angles, as this specific format oxidises or comes loose more easily than a standard headphone jack. Also check the reliability of USB recognition on the PC side as well as the correct functioning of the MFI input with an Apple device, as these certifications can degrade over time. The volume potentiometer deserves careful listening at low levels to detect any possible crackling or channel imbalance.
