Description
The Cary Audio Xciter DAC is a compact-format digital-to-analogue converter, originally designed to form a set with the Xciter integrated amplifier from the same manufacturer. It converts a digital signal, whether from a computer, a CD player or an audio/video server, into an analogue signal intended for a hi-fi system.
The unit has a USB input for connection to a computer, as well as an optical input and two coaxial inputs. Source selection is done directly from the front panel, where LEDs indicate the sampling frequency of the incoming signal, up to 192 kHz.
This DAC is aimed at users who wish to combine several digital sources within the same system, particularly those who listen to music from a computer as well as from an optical player or an audio server. Its compact format allows it to fit into a variety of setups.
What to check before buying used
The USB connector and its internal wiring are worth checking, as this input is the most heavily used and therefore the most exposed to contact wear. Each digital input (optical and coaxial) should also be tested separately to rule out any signal lock issues, along with the front-panel frequency LEDs, which should light up correctly according to the source. A check of the solder joints and internal capacitors is not superfluous on a unit of this generation.
