Description
The Meitner Audio MA1 v2 is a digital-to-analogue converter, or DAC, designed to convert a digital signal into an analogue signal for a preamplifier or an integrated amplifier. It is a unit designed by Ed Meitner, founder of EmmLabs, a company recognised for its work on digital conversion, notably on the DSD format used by SACD.
The unit offers several digital inputs: two coaxial inputs, two optical inputs, one AES/EBU input and one USB Type-B input. This variety allows different sources to be connected, whether a CD player, a digital transport or a computer. On the output side, the MA1 v2 has a stereo RCA output and a stereo XLR output, offering a choice between an unbalanced and a balanced connection.
The higher output voltage on XLR, combined with an output impedance suited to this type of connection, allows full use of amplifiers fitted with balanced inputs, often used over long cable distances or in systems sensitive to interference.

What to check before buying used
On this type of DAC, it is best to check that all digital inputs (coaxial, optical, AES/EBU and USB) are correctly recognised and free from crackling or sync loss, which are telltale signs of worn connectors or receiver circuits. The proper operation of the USB Type-B port deserves particular attention, as this connection is more sensitive than a coaxial or optical input to the wear of internal components. Checking the XLR and RCA output levels, as well as the fascia and the remote control if supplied, also helps to confirm that the unit delivers a signal consistent with its original specifications.
