Description
The M2Tech HiFace Evo is a digital audio interface that receives a USB v2 signal and converts it to several digital formats: S/PDIF in RCA and BNC format, AES/EBU in XLR format, optical TosLink and ST, as well as I2S via RJ45 connector. It is therefore an intermediate link designed to connect a computer to an external digital-to-analogue converter fitted with one of these inputs.
The multiplicity of outputs on offer allows the interface to be adapted to DACs of different generations and designs, without being limited to a single type of connection. The I2S format, less common, is aimed in particular at converters designed to make use of this type of direct link between digital chips.
The unit is supplied without a power supply and operates with a standard mains adaptor. M2Tech states, however, that the HiFace Evo reveals its full potential when paired with a dedicated audiophile power supply from the same brand, which suggests a sensitivity of the digital stage to the quality of the power supply.
This type of interface is aimed at a user who already owns an external DAC and wishes to improve or diversify the digital link between their computer and it, particularly when the DAC's native USB output is deemed unsatisfactory or absent.

What to check before buying used
The USB connector on the rear panel is subject to repeated insertions and may show play or a poorly made earth connection, causing crackling or dropouts in the digital stream. Check that each of the available outputs (RCA, BNC, XLR, TosLink, ST, RJ45 for I2S) delivers a stable signal, as a used unit may have been operated via a single connection for years without the others having been tested recently. The absence of the original mains adaptor means voltage and polarity compatibility must be checked before powering up, otherwise the digital stage may be damaged.
