M2Tech Hiface DAC
M2Tech HiFace USB DAC dongle, portable converter with Jack output, compatible with HD streams up to 32-bit/384 kHz.
Description
The M2Tech HiFace DAC is a digital-to-analogue converter in a USB dongle format, designed to plug directly into a computer and deliver an audio output via a Jack connection. It is a compact alternative to a conventional desktop DAC, intended to turn a computer's digital stream into an analogue signal that can be used by headphones or a hi-fi system.
This unit houses a conversion circuit capable of handling high-definition streams, notably FLAC and FLAC HD, up to a resolution of 32-bit and 384 kHz. It operates in asynchronous USB, a transmission mode that limits timing variations in the signal, in other words jitter, for a more stable sound reproduction.
Software compatibility covers Windows, Linux and Mac, with the necessary drivers to be downloaded from the manufacturer's website. The HiFace DAC can also be paired with an iPad via a camera adapter, allowing it to be used on the move with a tablet.
This DAC is aimed at anyone wishing to improve the audio output of a computer or tablet without investing in a bulky desktop device, for example for HD headphone listening or to feed a small hi-fi system from a workstation. Its compact format also makes it an easy companion to carry from one location to another.
What to check before buying used
The USB connector at the end of the unit is the most heavily used part: check that it is not bent or loose after years of repeated insertions into a computer port. Also test that the DAC is recognised under Windows, Linux or Mac once the manufacturer's drivers are installed, as some older models are not always still updated. Finally, the Jack headphone output deserves an ear check on both channels, as an internal loose contact could cause a loss of signal on one side.
