Description
The Copland CSA-70 is a stereo integrated amplifier designed to drive a pair of speakers directly without an additional power stage. It incorporates a phono preamplifier for MM cartridges, allowing a turntable to be connected without going through an external preamplifier. A 6.3 mm headphone output, located on the front panel, completes the unit for headphone listening independent of the speakers.
The preamplification section is based on a discrete component architecture, without valves, unlike the CSA100 and CSA150 models in the same range, which use tubes. The power stage delivers 2x130 W into 4 ohms and can operate into a minimum load of 2 ohms, reflecting a good ability to drive current-demanding speakers. The frequency response extends from 10 Hz to 150 kHz at -3dB, with total harmonic distortion better than 0.06% and an IHF-A signal-to-noise ratio better than 90 dB, ensuring a clean reproduction across the entire audible spectrum.
The MM phono input shows an impedance of 47 K ohms and a capacitance of 200 pF, for a sensitivity of 2.6 mV, while the line inputs have an impedance of 50 K ohms for a sensitivity of 250 mV. The headphone amplifier delivers a gain of 22 dB into a 100 ohm load, with an output impedance of 40 ohms and total harmonic distortion better than 0.05%.

What to check before buying used
On this integrated amplifier with discrete-component preamplification, turn the volume and balance potentiometers to check for any crackling or dropouts, a sign of track wear. Check for the absence of background noise or hum at rest, which would indicate ageing filter capacitors, and test the front-panel headphone output as well as the correct operation of the phase inversion. Checking the power stage under load, particularly at a low impedance close to the permissible 2 ohms, helps ensure that no channel overheats abnormally or clips.
