Description
The CTA-407 is a valve integrated amplifier, designed by Copland as an evolution of the CTA-405. It combines five line-level inputs, including a tape monitor loop, and a built-in RIAA phono circuit compatible with moving magnet (MM) and moving coil (MC) cartridges, allowing it to handle a vinyl source directly without an external preamplifier.
Its power section relies on four KT88 tubes arranged in push-pull, in a fixed ultra-linear configuration that combines the low distortion of triodes with the power of tetrodes. Limited to 2x50W into 3 or 8 ohms in high-bias class A/AB, this configuration allows the amplifier to deliver most of its power in class A operation, a mode renowned for its linearity. Overall feedback limited to 15 dB, combined with carefully designed output transformers, aims for good linearity even before feedback is applied, with total harmonic distortion below 0.9% and a signal-to-noise ratio above 90 dB. The frequency response extends from 5 Hz to 100 kHz at -3dB.
The motorised volume control and compatibility with the Copland RC102A remote control make everyday use easier. What to check before buying used
On a valve amplifier of this power, the KT88 output tubes and the 12BH7 and ECC83 preamplifier tubes are the first elements to check: their gradual wear results in a loss of dynamics or a duller sound. The CTA-407 features an automatic bias system visible via the LEDs on the front panel, a useful way to quickly check the condition of the power tubes on switch-on. It is also worth checking that the motorised volume control works correctly, a mechanism more sensitive than a conventional potentiometer, as well as the condition of the RIAA phono circuit if the unit is to be used with a turntable.
