Description
The Cyrus 40 AMP is a stereo integrated amplifier designed to sit at the heart of a home hi-fi system, whether built around digital or analogue sources. It combines power amplification and digital-to-analogue conversion within a single chassis, making it a convergence point for numerous sources.
The amplification stage delivers 2 x 100 W into 6 ohms, rising to 2 x 113 W when paired with an external 40 PSU power supply. The digital-to-analogue converter is built around the ESS Sabre ES9039Q2M chipset combined with HyperStream IV Dual DAC technology, capable of handling PCM files up to 32-bit / 768 kHz and DSD1024, with DSD256 and DOP128 compatibility depending on the format received. The built-in MM phono stage, derived from the Classic PHONO, is aimed directly at turntable users, offering low background noise and an extended dynamic range.
Connectivity is particularly generous for a unit in this category: four analogue inputs, one MM phono input, one optical input and two digital coaxial inputs, one asynchronous USB-B input as well as an HDMI eARC input for connecting a television. On the output side, there is an analogue preamplifier output, a fixed output and a headphone output. Firmware updates are carried out via an RJ45 Ethernet port or a USB-A socket, allowing the unit to be kept up to date over time.
This positioning makes it an amplifier suited to a single central system, able to accommodate a turntable as well as a high-resolution digital source, a computer via USB or a television via HDMI eARC. It will suit a listener looking to limit the number of separate components while retaining refined performance across each source type, and who wishes to keep room for future upgrades thanks to compatibility with the 40 PSU.

What to check before buying used
The motorised potentiometer and input switching relays deserve a full cold test: crackling, channel jumps or a drifting volume position all indicate a worn component. Also check that the ESS Sabre DAC correctly recognises all stated resolutions over USB and SPDIF, with no dropouts or background noise on the MM phono input. Finally, check that the Ethernet port and network updates respond normally, as some connectivity modules age poorly on digital amplifiers of this generation.
