Description
The Classic Pré is a stereo preamplifier from the Cyrus range, designed to centralise source selection and volume control within a hi-fi system. It combines analogue and digital inputs and offers a dedicated phono stage for playing a turntable fitted with an MM cartridge.
The MM phono input circuit relies on two active gain stages combined with passive RIAA equalisation, an architecture designed to reproduce signals from a turntable with minimal added noise. The power supply is based on a 74 VA toroidal transformer connected to a high-capacity energy reserve, while eleven independent regulators isolate and stabilise the various sections of the circuit; the digital control circuits even have a mains supply separate from the signal circuits, in order to limit interference. The Classic Pré also provides a connection port for the PSX-R external power supply, whose energy is routed to the analogue and post-DAC stages for more stable operation.
The connectivity combines four analogue line inputs, one MM phono input, two coaxial digital inputs and two optical Toslink digital inputs. The unbalanced outputs suit configurations where the power amplifier is close to the preamplifier, while the balanced XLR outputs are recommended for longer connections, particularly to amplifiers or active speakers located near the loudspeakers.
This preamplifier is aimed at hi-fi enthusiasts wishing to combine a vinyl source with several digital sources within the same system, with the option of positioning the power amplification further away thanks to the balanced outputs.

What to check before buying used
With this type of preamplifier, the MM phono stage deserves particular attention: check for the absence of background noise, hum or distortion on this input before purchasing. Also check that all the analogue and digital inputs (coaxial, optical) work properly, as well as the 3.5 mm headphone output. The PSX-R upgrade port and firmware port should be tested if used, and the input selectors are worth operating to detect any faulty contacts.
