Description
The Stream XP2 is a combined unit from Cyrus, bringing together a network player, digital-to-analogue converter and preamplifier within a single chassis. It allows several sources, both digital and analogue, to be centralised and can drive a power amplifier directly without an additional preamplification stage.
Conversion relies on a dual Burr-Brown DAC, capable of handling PCM streams up to 24-bit / 192 kHz as well as the Apple Lossless format. On the digital connectivity side, the unit offers three coaxial inputs, two optical inputs and one USB input, allowing several digital sources to be connected simultaneously. On the output side, there are fixed and variable RCA analogue outputs, a headphone output in mini-jack format, as well as a coaxial digital output allowing the signal to be sent to another unit.
This preamplifier-DAC is aimed at enthusiasts wishing to simplify a hi-fi system by combining several functions into a single unit, while retaining the possibility of expanding the system later on. The presence of variable outputs allows it to be paired directly with a power amplifier, without going through a separate preamplifier.
The Stream XP2 is designed to be upgradeable: it accepts optional upgrade modules, such as the Qx DAC module or the PSX-R2 external power supply, which improve the unit's performance without needing to replace it.

What to check before buying used
The dual Burr-Brown DAC generally ages well, but it is worth checking that each digital input (coaxial, optical, USB) is properly recognised without dropouts or background noise. The mini-jack headphone output and the volume potentiometer on the variable outputs deserve a careful test, as crackling or a channel dropout indicates worn contacts. If the unit is fitted with the Qx DAC module or the PSX-R2 power supply, check that the connection between the units works correctly and without hum.
