Description
The Epikore 9 is a 4-way floorstanding speaker designed and manufactured by Dali in Denmark. It belongs to the manufacturer's high-end range, with a bass-reflex loaded cabinet fitted with a dual rear port, intended for listening in large rooms.
The 4-way configuration combines two 20 cm woofers with a wood fibre cone using SMC technology, a 16.5 cm midrange driver using the same cone and technology, a 35 mm soft dome tweeter and a 10 x 55 mm ribbon tweeter. This arrangement across four drivers, with crossover frequencies at 400, 3,100 and 12,500 Hz, allows each driver to handle a narrower portion of the sound spectrum.
The frequency response extends from 29 Hz to 34 kHz, with a sensitivity of 88 dB and a maximum sound pressure level of 112 dB. The 4 ohm impedance and the recommended power handling, between 40 and 500 watts, call for an amplifier capable of delivering substantial current to make full use of the speaker.
The curved cabinet combines genuine wood veneer with a piano gloss finish, for a housing described as solid and inert, a feature that helps limit sound colouration caused by panel vibrations.
This speaker is suited to a high-end stereo or home cinema setup, in a listening room large enough to make the most of its size and extended bass response. It is aimed at a demanding listener with a powerful amplifier that is stable into a 4 ohm load.

What to check before buying used
The surrounds of the two 20 cm woofers deserve close inspection: on speakers several years old, the foam or rubber can crack or harden, which affects bass performance. Also check the condition of the ribbon tweeter, more fragile than a conventional dome and costly to replace if damaged by impact or overload. The wood veneer and piano gloss finish of the curved cabinet are prone to chips, scratches and moisture marks, particularly on the edges and top of the cabinet. Finally, testing each channel at moderate volume helps identify any unwanted noise or localised distortion on one of the four drivers.
