Description
The Opticon 2 MKII is a two-way bookshelf speaker designed by Dali, pairing a 6½" wood fibre mid-bass driver with a more recently developed hybrid tweeter. Compact in format, it is aimed at medium-sized listening rooms without requiring the bulk of a floorstanding speaker.
The tweeter combines a 29 mm soft dome derived from the Callisto range with a 17 x 45 mm ribbon, mounted on a moulded aluminium front plate that controls sound dispersion. This pairing aims to combine the speed and dynamics of a dome with the level of detail characteristic of a ribbon tweeter. Frequency response extends from 59 Hz to 25 kHz, with a crossover at 2 kHz between the two drive units. The sensitivity of 86.5 dB/W/m and the nominal impedance of 4 ohms should be taken into account when choosing amplification, while the stated maximum sound level reaches 107 dB.
The bass-reflex ports use the Dual Flare technique, a laminar profile designed to reduce air turbulence and improve driver efficiency for deeper, better-controlled bass. The magnet system also incorporates an SMC material with high magnetic permeability and low electrical conductivity, intended to limit eddy currents and hysteresis to reduce electro-acoustic distortion.
This speaker is intended for stereo use, for music listening in a medium-sized room, for a user seeking faithful reproduction without an oversized power amplifier stage given its moderate sensitivity. What to check before buying used
The suspensions of the 6½" wood fibre driver deserve close inspection: sagging or hardening of the material affects bass performance and can cause a rubbing noise at high volume. The hybrid tweeter, with its 17 x 45 mm ribbon paired with the 29 mm dome, is a fragile component that should be carefully listened to across the full treble range to detect any distortion. Also check the condition of the cabinet and the Dual Flare ports, as any deformation impairs the effectiveness of the bass-reflex design.
