Dali Phantom E60 S

The Phantom E-60 S belongs to Dali's in-ceiling family and stands out through a precise principle: a single chassis handles the reproduction of both channels of a stereo signal. Where a conventional installation requires two spaced-apart speakers, this one fits into a single circular cut-out, in the ceiling or in a wall, and creates a soundstage from this single point. It can also serve as a height channel within a multichannel installation.

The acoustic configuration directly reflects this stereo purpose. Two 28 mm soft polypropylene dome tweeters are positioned on either side, off-axis, while a single 165 mm midrange-woofer driver with a polypropylene cone, mounted at an angle, handles the register common to both channels. The crossover between the two occurs at 2,600 Hz. The internal structure is dual mono: separate inputs and filter mounts for each channel, allowing both channels to be treated independently. Two selectors allow the sound to be adjusted according to the room, a useful option when the in-ceiling installation dictates a placement that is not really chosen.

The operating figures point to a speaker that is easy to drive: 90 dB sensitivity and 8 ohms nominal impedance suit most amplifiers, with rated power quoted at 2 x 20 to 80 watts, i.e. one amplified channel per way. Response extends from 57 Hz to 25 kHz at ±3 dB, and maximum output reaches 105 dB.

The dimensions remain compact: 250 mm in diameter for 99.5 mm depth and 2 kg on the scale, with a 225 mm cut-out required in the ceiling or partition. This modest depth eases integration between joists or within a false ceiling. The choice of polypropylene for the cone, more tolerant of humidity than the wood fibre diaphragms usually found from the manufacturer, opens up installation to wet rooms or sheltered outdoor spaces. An optional back box from the brand can complete the installation: it isolates the rear of the driver from dust and moisture, stabilises the load when the volume behind the partition is irregular, and limits the transmission of vibrations to the structure.

This model is aimed at those who want stereo listening in a room where no visible speaker is wanted: kitchen, bathroom, hallway, spare bedroom, covered terrace. It also suits anyone looking for a discreet height channel within an existing home cinema system. It is not a substitute for a properly spaced pair of speakers facing a listening position, but a relevant answer for spaces where that pair has no place.
