Description
The Rubicon 5 is a 2-way floorstanding speaker, the most compact model in Dali's Rubicon range. It stands out with a hybrid tweeter module combining a 29 mm textile dome tweeter and a 17x45 mm ribbon tweeter, a signature configuration of the Danish brand, manufactured in Denmark for this range. It is designed to reproduce an expansive soundstage with a high level of detail in the treble.
The 16.5 cm woofer uses a wood fibre cone, a light and rigid diaphragm that limits surface resonances and behaves like a piston. The loading system is bass-reflex, tuned to 39 Hz, for a stated frequency response of 45 Hz to 34 kHz. SMC technology is fitted to the driver motor, surrounded by copper and paired with a ferrite magnet, with the aim of reducing distortion. The midrange and woofer drivers are separated into distinct chambers, allowing tuning specific to each transducer. The crossover cuts at 2.9 and 14 kHz, sensitivity is 86 dB/W/m and nominal impedance is 4 ohms, for a maximum sound level of 107 dB.
This speaker is aimed at hi-fi use in a living room or dedicated listening room, for an enthusiast seeking a floorstanding speaker with a compact footprint (195 x 890 x 339 mm, 15.7 kg) yet capable of delivering deep bass without requiring a large cabinet volume. Its 4 ohm impedance requires an amplifier capable of delivering sufficient current to make full use of it.

What to check before buying used
Check the flexibility of the 16.5 cm woofer's suspension: a sagging or cracked surround, or a cone that rubs, indicates wear or damp storage. Inspect the ribbon tweeter, which is more fragile than a conventional dome and sometimes damaged by a clipped signal or incorrect wiring. Also examine the cabinet (veneer, corners, bass-reflex port) to rule out handling damage, and test each channel separately to detect a faulty crossover or magnet.
