Description
The Balthus 30 is the bookshelf model in the Balthus range by Davis. It uses the same midrange and treble drivers found on the larger floorstanding models in the same range, in a compact format designed to fit easily into a living room or office.
The speaker adopts a 2-way Bass-Reflex architecture: the 13 cm woofer-midrange driver with Kevlar cone is paired with a 2.5 cm soft dome tweeter, managed by a crossover at 4 kHz. The ferrite motor on the woofer-midrange driver provides good efficiency, making it easier to pair with most amplifiers on the market, provided at least 50 W per channel is available. The bass-reflex loading relies on a port at the rear of the cabinet: a distance of 10 to 15 cm from the wall is required for the bass-reflex effect to work correctly.
With a sensitivity of 90 dB, a power handling of 80 W RMS (120 W peak) and a nominal impedance of 8 ohms (4 ohms minimum), the Balthus 30 is designed for extended listening at sustained volume without listening fatigue, thanks to a frequency response stated as linear across the 50 Hz to 20 kHz range.
This model is intended primarily for stereo use in a small to medium-sized room, with an amplifier of sufficient power. It can also be used as a surround channel in a home cinema set-up, alongside the Balthus 10 centre channel or the Balthus 50, 70 or 90 floorstanding speakers used as front channels.

What to check before buying used
Check the condition of the Kevlar woofer-midrange driver's suspension: sagging or tearing around the cone results in a dull sound and a lack of bass control. Also inspect the tweeter dome, which is prone to dents and fingerprints. Examine the cabinet and veneer at the corners, as well as the bass-reflex port grille at the rear, which can crack over time. Finally, make sure both speakers produce a symmetrical sound in the midrange and treble.
