The Courbet N°4 is a floorstanding speaker from Davis Acoustics, the latest evolution of the Courbet range. Its format sits between a bookshelf speaker and a traditional floorstanding speaker, a choice designed to fit into smaller rooms while retaining the sonic ambition of a larger model.
To suit this particular cabinet volume, Davis Acoustics developed a bespoke woofer/midrange driver, drawing on its more than thirty years of experience in transducer design. Kevlar was chosen for this driver for its balance between lightness and rigidity, a characteristic that promotes stable diaphragm behaviour. This transducer is paired with the tweeter specific to the Courbet range, selected to match its qualities.
This speaker is aimed at those who wish to install a floorstanding speaker in a modestly sized living room, without giving up the spirit of a high-end French range. It will suit demanding music listening in a space where a traditional floorstanding speaker would be too bulky.
What to check before buying used
On a compact floorstanding speaker such as the N°4, the woofer/midrange suspension deserves close inspection: sagging or tearing of the Kevlar affects bass performance. Also check the tweeter, more exposed to electrical or mechanical shocks on an older model, as well as the cabinet and veneer, which are sensitive to moisture marks or chips on the edges of the cabinet. Testing both speakers simultaneously helps identify any asymmetry in output between the two units.
